The mining industry is turning its attention to northern Chile as Mirasol Resources, a Canada-based exploration company, officially launches its 2025/26 exploration campaign at the promising Sobek copper-gold-silver project. According to a recent report from BNAmericas, the company will deploy high-resolution geophysical surveys in hopes of identifying a major new mineral discovery in one of South America’s most prospective mining regions.
Located in the highly mineralized Vicuña district, near the Chile–Argentina border, Sobek sits strategically close to several world-class assets. The district has recently gained global attention following the US$4.5 billion acquisition of Filo Corp. by BHP and Lundin Mining, forming the new Vicuña Group to advance the Filo del Sol and Josemaría projects. The area is widely considered one of the richest copper and gold frontiers in the Andes.
Prime Location Near Major Discoveries
The Sobek project is situated in Chile’s Atacama Region—an area known for its exceptional mineral potential. It lies just 7 km from the Filo del Sol deposit and 3 km from Lunahuasi, the latest high-grade discovery by NGEx Minerals. Mirasol Resources also maintains the Los Helados project, another well-known high-grade copper-gold system that spans the border between Chile and Argentina.
The company recently emphasized that Sobek’s position within the Vicuña region “significantly expands its strategic footprint” in an emerging district marked by continuous world-class discoveries. Covering 9,640 hectares of mining claims, the Sobek property includes several high-priority exploration zones, including a newly identified drill target called 46 South.
A Strong Geological Signal
Mirasol Resources’ latest geochemical surveys revealed a “robust, widespread and continuous copper-gold-molybdenum anomaly” measuring 1.0 × 0.7 kilometers—the strongest anomaly ever recorded on the Sobek property. CEO Tim Heenan highlighted the importance of this exploration phase, calling it “a critical step forward” for the company.
Once the advanced geophysical data is analyzed, Mirasol expects to begin drilling as early as January next year. The use of high-precision technologies—similar to those applied at the nearby Valeriano project (operated by Atex) and the Altar project in Argentina (operated by Aldebarán)—is intended to improve targeting accuracy and increase the likelihood of a meaningful discovery.
Potential Opportunities for the Global Mining Supply Chain
As exploration accelerates in the Andes, major mining projects in copper, gold, and silver continue to generate strong demand for mine development infrastructure, including underground reinforcement, stability solutions, and safety systems. Projects approaching drilling and construction phases often require large volumes of rock bolts, steel mesh, anchor cables, and steel arch supports to ensure safe and efficient operations in challenging geological settings.
Manufacturers such as Hebei Jiufu Industrial and Mining Accessories Co., Ltd., a professional supplier of mine support products for global markets, are well positioned to support new exploration and development activities in regions like Chile, Peru, and Argentina. With rising investment in high-altitude Andean mining, the need for reliable and corrosion-resistant support systems is expected to grow significantly.
As copper continues to play a leading role in global electrification—fueling renewable energy systems, electric vehicles, and power transmission—the world’s attention remains fixed on exploration hotspots like the Vicuña district. A major discovery at Sobek could reinforce northern Chile’s reputation as a global hub for next-generation copper mining.
A Region Poised for New Discoveries
The Vicuña region has already delivered several high-grade copper-gold deposits, and the launch of Mirasol’s latest campaign increases the likelihood of yet another major find. With advanced geophysics, improved data accuracy, and growing investor interest, Sobek is emerging as one of the most watched exploration assets in the Andes.
As development activities progress, companies like Hebei Jiufu Industrial and Mining Accessories Co., Ltd. will continue to play a critical role in supporting underground safety and stability—ensuring that new mineral discoveries can transition smoothly from exploration to full-scale production.
